SUMMARY Background It is not known whether cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk level is related to knowledge of the leading cause of death of women, or heart attack symptoms. Hypothesis Women with higher CVD risk estimated by Framingham Risk Score (FRS) or Metabolic Syndrome (MS) have lower CVD knowledge. Methods Women visiting primary care clinics completed a standardized behavioral risk questionnaire. Blood pressure, weight, height, waist size, fasting glucose and lipid profile were assessed. Women were queried regarding CVD knowledge. Results Participants (n=823) were Hispanic women (46%), Non-Hispanic White (37%), Non-Hispanic Black (8%). FRS was determined in 278: low (63%), moderate (29%), and high (8%); 24% had ≥3 components of MS. The leading cause of death was answered correctly by 54%, heart attack symptoms by 67%. Knowledge was lowest among racial/ethnic minorities and those with less education (both p<0.001). Increasing FRS was inversely associated with knowing the leading cause of death (low 72%, moderate 68%, high 45%, p=0.045). After multivariable adjustment, moderate/high FRS was inversely associated with knowing symptoms (moderate OR 0.52, 95% CI 0.28–0.98, high OR 0.29, 95% CI 0.11–0.81), but not the leading cause of death. MS was inversely associated with knowing the leading cause of death (p<0.001) or heart attack symptoms (p=0.018), but not after multivariable adjustment. Conclusions Women with higher FRS were less likely to know heart attack symptoms. Efforts to target those at higher CVD risk must persist or the most vulnerable may suffer disproportionately, not only because of risk factors, but also inadequate knowledge.

Background To establish prevalence, risk factors, and impact of work‐related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among farmers in Ireland. Methods In summer 2009, a questionnaire was appended to the Teagasc (Irish Agricultural and Food Development Authority) National Farm Survey (n = 1,110) to obtain data on the prevalence, risk factors and impact of WMSDs amongst farm operators in Ireland. Data were collected by trained recorders and analyzed using chi‐square tests, t‐tests, Mann–Whitney's U‐tests and logistic regression models. Results The prevalence of WMSDs in the previous year was 9.4% (n = 103), with the most commonly affected body region being the low back 31% (n = 32). Nearly 60% (n = 57) of farmers reported missing at least a full day's work as a consequence of their WMSD. Personal factors evaluated using binary regression analysis, were found not to influence whether or not a farmer experienced a WMSD. However, work‐related factors such as larger European Size Units (ESUs, OR: 1.007, CI: 1.002–1.012), greater number of hectares farmed (OR: 2.501, CI: 1.208–4.920), higher income (OR: 1.859, CI: 1.088–3.177), dairy enterprise (OR: 1.734, CI: 1.081–2.781), and working on a full‐time farm (OR: 2.156, CI: 1.399–3.321) increased the likelihood of experiencing a WMSD. Working on a full‐time farm was the only factor found to independently predict WMSDs in the multiple regression analyses. Conclusions This study suggests that the prevalence of WMSDs can be reduced by the application of improved farm management practices. A more detailed examination of the risk factors associated with WMSDs is required to establish causality and develop effective interventions. Am. J. Ind. Objective: To review of the literature about social representations of cancer and chemotherapy.Method: For this review was made a search of the literature in specialized databases through keywords combination: theory of social representations, physical illness, cancer and chemotherapy.Results: We found that even in the 21st century, cancer continues to be subject to negative social representations as well as chemotherapy; there is an obvious deficit of research concerning the topic; a professional duty is to encourage research in this topic to promote these representations change both the patient,caregivers and healthcare professionals, providing better care to the cancer patient and consequently a better adaptation to the physical and social changes that involve the disease.Keywords: Social representations, physical illness, cancer, chemotherapy. ResumenObjetivo: Realizar una revisión de la literatura sobre las representaciones sociales del cáncer y de la quimioterapia.Método: Para esta revisión se hizo una bús-queda de la literatura en bases de datos especializadas a través de la combinación de diversas palabras clave como teoría de las representaciones sociales, representaciones sociales de la enfermedad, cáncer y quimioterapia.Resultados: Se encontró que aún en el siglo XXI, el cáncer continúa siendo objeto de representaciones sociales negativas al igual que la quimioterapia; hay un déficit evidente de investigaciones referentes al tema; es un deber profesional incentivar la investigación en este tema para promover el cambio de dichas representaciones tanto en el enfermo como en los cuidadores y profesionales de la salud, propiciando una mejor atención al enfermo de cáncer y en consecuencia una mejor adaptación a los cambios físicos y sociales que implican la enfermedad.Palabras clave: Representaciones sociales, enfermedad física, cáncer, quimioterapia.
