A potential naphtho[2,1-b:3,4-b′]dithiophene-based polymer with large open circuit voltage for efficient use in organic solar cells

Abstract: We designed a new copolymer, PNDT-BTN with NDT and alkoxy-naphthalene units. PNDT-BDT showed an effectively lowered HOMO level by inducing non-planarity, resulting in enhanced VOC.

“…405 °C, a desirable characteristic for OSC polymers . Interestingly, DSC thermograms (Figures b,c) showed no apparent thermal transition for 24PPTCT, implying that this polymer exists in an amorphous state at room temperature . In contrast, 29PPTCT, which contains an linear alkyl spacer (C6), showed distinct melting and crystallization transitions at 253 and 205 °C, respectively.…”

“…23 Interestingly, DSC thermograms (Figures 1b,c) showed no apparent thermal transition for 24PPTCT, implying that this polymer exists in an amorphous state at room temperature. 24 In contrast, 29PPTCT, which contains an linear alkyl spacer (C6), showed distinct melting and crystallization transitions at 253 and 205 °C, respectively. This suggests that the relatively planar structure of 29PPTCT results in a lower degree of steric hindrance and less torsional interactions, which in turn result in stronger intermolecular π−π interactions.…”

“…28,29 It was expected that the low-lying HOMO levels of these copolymers would result in high opencircuit voltages of polymeric solar cells (PSCs). 30 LUMO energy levels were calculated from the onset reduction potentials (E red onset ) (20.86 V for PTTC and 20.84 V for PTVTC) and thus PTTC and PTVTC showed LUMO energy levels of 23.56 and 23.58 eV, respectively. This suggests that the LUMO energies were about 0.4 eV above those of the PC 71 BM acceptor (24.0 eV), which generates a driving force for the energetically favorable electron transfer.…”
