A Power-Assistance System using a Battery and an Electric Double-Layer Capacitor Bank for Light Electric Vehicles

Abstract: To improve the performance of light electric vehicles (LEVs), we propose a current sharing control system for series-parallel changeover, whose hybrid energy storage system (HESS) comprises an electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) bank and a main battery. In the proposed system, the series or parallel connection between the EDLC bank and the main battery is decided depending on the bank voltage for managing the energy stored in the HESS. Moreover, we propose a simple output current control method for the para… Show more

“…Fundamentally, such batteries have a tradeoff between power and capacity design, and highpower stress sometimes causes critical damage in the battery, such as well known as internal lithium-metal deposit. To overcome the tradeoff in the battery design by a systematical approach, a hybrid energy source system (HESS) was proposed [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. HESS uses both power and energy type of energy sources to control of power in/out using DC-DC converters to improve system performance.…”

“…Electric motors have three significant advantages over internal combustion engines: their torque response is several hundred times faster and more accurate than that of the internal combustion engine, their output torque can be directly measured from the current value of the motor, and distributed small motors enable flexible arrangements [1]. By utilizing these features effectively, advanced vehicle motion control becomes possible [2]- [4].…”
