A Practical Approach for Environmental Flow Calculation to Support Ecosystem Management in Wujiang River, China

Abstract: To promote ecosystem protection in the Wujiang River, this paper proposes a practical approach for calculating the environmental flow. The proposed approach combines the idea of the “guarantee rate” of the flow duration curve (FDC) method and the grading idea of the Tennant method. A daily flow series of the Wujiang River was compiled from 1956 to 2019 and used to compare the effect of the proposed approach versus the traditional approaches in four selected sections along the river. The results show that the e… Show more

“…Ren Peng (Peng & JIN, 2020) used the median theory to improve Tennant's method, and the results calculated can better respond to the seasonal changes of the Nandu River on Hainan Island. Xiaokuan Ni (Ni et al, 2022) proposed the T-FDC method and verified that the T-DFC method has strong applicability in the Wujiang River Basin, and the results can provide reliable technical support for the ecological flow management in the Wujiang River Basin. Tian Chen (Chen & Xingtao, 2022) improved the traditional Tennant method to make it more accurate and reasonable for the ecological flow calculation in Fen River Basin.…”

“…Mishra et al (2019), assessed the Correlation between the Tennant method and Standardized Precipitation Index for predicting environmental ow conditions using rainfall in Godavari Basin, the study attempted to correlate the concepts of Tennant and SPI to explore the ability of SPI to predict environmental ow conditions using rainfall. Ni et al (2022), estimated environmental ow calculation to support ecosystem management in Wujiang River, China. The results show that the environmental ow of the Wujiang River can be divided into ve levels by the T-FDC method, with a level-by-level disparity, and all levels can capture the temporal and spatial variability of the river ow.…”

“…The environmental flow rate is important to preserve the existing ecosystem. Ni et al [14] designed a methodology for the environmental flow, also known as T-FDC. The methodology allows the construction of flow duration curves by grouping flow data monthly from different years, in order to better represent the temporal variability of the flow of water bodies.…”
