A Praxical Solution of the Symbol Grounding Problem

Abstract: This article is the second step in our research into the Symbol Grounding Problem (SGP). In a previous work, we defined the main condition that must be satisfied by any strategy in order to provide a valid solution to the SGP, namely the zero semantic commitment condition (Z condition). We then showed that all the main strategies proposed so far fail to satisfy the Z condition, although they provide several important

“…Symbols here are defined in the sense of Harnad (1991) who uses the Chinese Room Argument (Searle 1980) to introduce the Symbol Grounding Problem. This is in line with the praxical solution proposed by Taddeo and Floridi [15] in form of Action-based Semantics with the simple basic idea that initially, the meanings of the symbols generated by an agent are the internal states of the agent which are directly correlated with the agents actions.…”

“…Floridi, who together with Taddeo [15] contributed to the research on the data grounding problem, explains the situation in the following way: "Arguably, the frame problem (how a situated agent can represent, and interact with, a changing world satisfactorily) and its sub-problems are a consequence of the data grounding problem [Harnad 1993], Taddeo and Floridi [2005]). In more metaphysical terms, this is the problem of the semanticisation of being and it is further connected with the problem of whether information can be naturalised."…”

“…The dominant frameworks of cognition are all characterized by inherent limitations, such as the inability to account for both low-and high-level cognition, or to scale between them (the symbol's grounding problem-how symbols get their meanings, and of what meanings they are comprised). Neither symbolic nor connectionist frameworks are able to account for the emergence of representation in a purely naturalistic manner (see [33]). …”
