A predictive spatial model for gray wolf (Canis lupus) denning sites in a human‐dominated landscape in western Iran

Abstract: Predictive models of species denning habitat are useful for understanding distribution of core use areas and identifying areas with potential conflicts. Wolf den site selection in unmanaged areas with dominance of agriculture‐lands and human disturbance is not completely understood. We used a GIS multivariate model based on the Mahalanobis distance statistic and 11 digital habitat layers to evaluate gray wolf denning site suitability in Hamedan province (HP), western Iran. Results showed that >74 % of dens occ… Show more

“…Based on wolf-habitat relationships (Massolo and Meriggi 1998;Carroll et al 2003;Jedrzejewski et al 2005;Hebblewhite and Merrill 2008;Laporte et al 2010;Eggermann et al 2011;Ahmadi et al 2013;Falcucci et al 2013), we selected a set of 16 predictor variables for which geographic information system (GIS) data were available for the entire study area, including ecological, topographic and anthropogenic features (Table 1). Habitat diversity (Shannon Diversity Index) and land cover types were obtained from the Coordination of Information on the Environment (CORINE Land Cover 2006, IV Level; http://www.sinanet.isprambiente.…”

“…Even when compensations are ensured, depredation on livestock could increase the number of illegal killings, which are the most important threat to the long-term conservation of carnivores (Caniglia et al 2010;Ahmadi et al 2013). The evaluation of conflicts with human activities in humandominated landscapes is a priority to design sound conservation strategies for large carnivores (Treves et al 2012;Miotto et al 2011).…”

“…Predictive distribution models (PDMs) have been increasingly used to visualize potential distribution areas of living entities such as birds (Manel et al, 1999;Brotons et al, 2004;Seoane et al,2004;Ortega-Huerta and Peterson, 2008), plants (Ray et al, 2011;Rameshprabu and Swamy, 2015), wild animals (Munguía et al, 2008;Ahmadi et al, 2013;Kramer Schadt et al, 2013), insects (Tognelli et al,2009;Habel et al, 2010;Dáttilo et al, 2012;Sobek-Swantet al,2012;Filz and Schmitt, 2015;Sánchez-García et al, 2015), reptiles and amphibians (Guisan and Hofer, 2003;Arntzen, 2006;Franklin et al, 2009) in conservation biology, biogeography and forest ecology. Those models have been also used in mapping vegetation communities (Lees and Ritman, 1991;Dymond and Johnson, 2002;Boyden et al, 2013), ecological land classification (Blasi et al,2000;Özkan et al, 2013;Grondin et al, 2014) and biodiversity (Özkanet al, 2016).…”

“…In other studies, wolves selected den sites within 500 m of water (Ballard and Dau 1983, Norris et al 2002, Trapp 2004, Ahmadi et al 2013, likely due to greater requirements for hydration o f the breeding female during lactation (Peterson and Ciucci 2003). Water availability, however, is not likely to be a limiting factor in the central Arctic as the tundra landscape is covered with a mosaic o f small ponds, creeks, and lakes (ECG 2012).…”

“…Several studies have focused on the spatial distribution and selection of den sites by wolves (Ballard and Dau 1983, Fuller 1989, Ciucci and Mech 1992, Theuerkauf et al 2003, Ahmadi et al 2013. Most, however, have occurred within forested landscapes or mountainous regions where wolves are likely to exploit a more consistently available and sedentary prey base than in arctic ecosystems.…”
