A preliminary karyological analysis of five species of Solatopupa (pulmonata, chondrinidae)

Abstract: The meiotic and mitotic chromosomes of the five recognized species of Solatopupa Pilsbry 1917 are described and compared. Meiosis is of a standard type. The karyotype of S. psarolena (Bourguignat) with 2n=56 chromosomes and a conspicuously large metacentric pair is compared with those of S.pallida (Rossmässler) and S.simonettae (Giusti) having 2n=58 chromosomes, and with that of S.similis (Bruguière) which has 2n=60. A Robertsonian fusion could be linked with the splitting of S.psarolena from a common ancestor… Show more

“…Alternatively, the species might have reached these islands by dispersal. Boato (1986) demonstrated an allopatric distribution of populations of S. similis with diVerent chromosome numbers (2N D 60 in populations from Spain to Western Liguria, 2N D 58 in populations from Eastern Liguria to Northern Latium). Subsequently, the same author found more than a 40% of genetic divergence at 28 allozyme loci and slight morphological diVerences between the two chro-mosomal forms (Boato, 1988(Boato, , 1991.…”

“…1 a-e). A sixth species was recently individuated within the S. similis complex by its karyologic and allozymic characters (Boato, 1986a(Boato, , b, 1988Boato & Rodino, 1986). This last is here provisionally named 5.…”

“…The analysis of genetic diversity and chromosomes (Boato, 1986a(Boato, , b, 1988 has in fact allowed the recognition of at least two cryptic species within the «species» of widest range, S. similis (Bruguiere 1792). This is a rather trivial finding in microevolutioriary studies.…”

“…This is at least partly due to the difficulties in obtaining mitotic plates of enough quality to carry out chromosome studies. Moreover, in some cases, a large number of mitotic cells are very rarely found since gonial mitoses happen in a very short time (Burch 1965;Burch 1968b;Boato 1986;Park et al 1999;Awodiran et al 2012). Besides, modern cytogenetic techniques have only recently been adopted for studies of Gastropoda (Park 2016).…”
