A Principled Approach to Grammars for Controlled Natural Languages and Predictive Editors

Abstract: Controlled natural languages (CNL) with a direct mapping to formal logic have been proposed to improve the usability of knowledge representation systems, query interfaces, and formal specifications. Predictive editors are a popular approach to solve the problem that CNLs are easy to read but hard to write. Such predictive editors need to be able to "look ahead" in order to show all possible continuations of a given unfinished sentence. Such lookahead features, however, are difficult to implement in a satisfyin… Show more

“…In addition, rules need to be found so as to process groups of tokens so as to know which one is a compound noun and which one is a noun phrase, in order to process them correctly. Hopefully then also sufficient insight is gained to construct a set of requirements for the grammar and either practical ones might be extended, such as the CFG of Ukwabelana (Spiegler et al, 2010), explorations of (Zeller, 2005) worked out in detail, or a natural language-independent approach like in (Kuhn, 2013) may be adjusted, or a new one devised to handle the syntactic elements to generate sentences with the intended semantics.…”

“…This problem can be mitigated by means of specialized text editors (e.g., as provided by the Grammatical Framework [44], [45,Chap. 7] or Attempto Controlled English [15,25]) which guide the user towards writing acceptable sentences. Adding specific language constructs for static infrastructure analysis of railway designs ensures that the level of abstraction is close to the original regulation text.…”

“…The reader is invited to consult a detailed synthesis and classification of CNL principles and projects given in (Kuhn, 2014). Furthermore, investigations on grammars for CNL is investigated in (Kuhn, 2013). More specialized analysis for critical systems are given in e.g.…”
