A Productivity Dashboard for Hospitals: An Empirical Study

Abstract: Health information systems are key assets in managing health units' daily operations. Nevertheless, literature is scarce concerning information systems for increasing and managing hospital productivity. This study aims at filling such gap through an empirical research based on large Portuguese hospital. Specifically, a dashboard prototype is proposed addressing productivity indicators in areas such as assistance, hospitalization, surgery, among others. This dashboard is tuned using a design science research ap… Show more

“…Prototyping is commonly used for requirements elicitation to 'provide users with an idea of how a system will behave' [15]. Developing an artefact as a prototype to accompany an interview is also commonly used in the field of information systems [20] and considered as the first iteration in the design science research methodology [10,52,53]. Prototyping helped us communicate our ideas and obtain feedback from the interview participants to develop a human values dashboard.…”

“…Finally, the dashboard presents the number of customers expected as a result from the forecast, and the comparison between real sales and budget. We followed the best practices in dashboard design to facilitate the evaluation of the information provided (Few, 2006;Pestana et al, 2018;Wexler et al, 2017).…”

“…The ED is usually overcrowded, which contributes to difficulties in providing timely and safe treatment. 1 However, the transformation of the health system in Saudi Arabia when it comes to improving patient access to care has made the time required to complete triage, assessments, and treatments in the ED the main indicator for hospital performance. The Ministry of Health's target is that 86% of patients be triaged, assessed, and treated in less than four hours.…”

“…This tendency to use more indicators is much stronger in hospitals. 1 Busy healthcare teams can obtain a cursory idea of a patient's information by having a fast check-in dashboard. Researchers around the world have mentioned several important points that explain the benefits of dashboards.…”
