A pronounced catalytic activity of heteropoly compounds supported on dealuminated USY for liquid-phase esterification of acetic acid with n-butanol

Abstract: 12-Phosphotungstic acid and its cesium salts supported on a dealuminated ultra-stable Y zeolite were prepared, and showed the high catalytic activity in the liquid-phase esterification of acetic acid with n-butanol. The supported Cs 2.5 H 0.5 PW 12 O 40 catalyst gave a high conversion of n-butanol of 94.6% and a selectivity for n-butyl acetate of 100%, accompanying the high water-tolerance and catalytic reusability without regeneration.

“…Pt/DUSY has a high BET surface area of 560 m 2 /g, and the area decreases remarkably with the increase of Cs 2.0 PW loading. For the same loading (10%) of Cs salts of PW, the BET surface area decreases with the increase of the substitute number of Cs + , which are in good agreement with the previous report [24]. Generally speaking, the supported samples still possess rather high surface areas due to the dispersion effect of the porous carrier, except for the Pt20%Cs 2.0 PW/DUSY sample, which lost the porous structure of Y zeolite in its support.…”

“…The same authors also studied the synthesis of fructone-B by acetalization of ethylacetoacetate with 1,2-propanediol and observed similar results, the Cs salts being active with minimal leaching [54]. In another paper [55], they used these catalysts for the liquid-phase esterification of acetic acid with n-butanol. The conversion was higher than that observed when using the zeolite or the polyoxometalate alone.…”

“…These supported catalysts have been widely studied and found useful in many reactions such as the synthesis of 2,4-dihydropyrimidones, 12 metanethole , 13 α-aminonitriles 14 and esterification. 15,16 Imidazoline derivatives are of great interest and importance because of their pharmaceutical and synthetic material applications. 33 and N-tert-butoxycarbonyl-protected α-amino acids.…”
