A Proposal on the Validation Model of Equivalence between PBLT and CBLT

Abstract: The validity of the computer-based language test is possibly affected by three factors: computer familiarity, audio-visual cognitive competence, and other discrepancies in construct. Therefore, validating the equivalence between the paper-and-pencil language test and the computer-based language test is a key step in the procedure of designing a computer-based language test. By taking the test on Essentials of English-Speaking Countries as the case study, this paper elucidates the three-step model of validating… Show more

“…The major instruments employed in the two major researches include the computerized testing system Fast Test Pro 2 (Weiss, 2008), the data analysis software SPSS and Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI) (Spielberger, 1980). In order to avoid the probable difference in test validity between pencil-and-paper tests and computerized tests (Chen, 2009), and to ensure the test items are presented strictly according to a certain order, all the tests involved in this research (questionnaires excluded) are administered through computerized tests. The computerized tests involved in this research can be classified into two categories: one is conventional computerized tests which administer items in fixed orders and are applied to Investigation I; the other is computerized adaptive tests which adjust the item order according to the performance of a specific examinee.…”

“…The studies reviewed above all focused on English for general purposes. Research on computer-based assessment of English for specific purposes or content-based assessment has been rare in China, except for Si (2008) and Chen (2009). Si ( 2008) investigated the computer-based assessment of students' speaking ability in business contexts, while Chen (2009) piloted computer-based assessment of students' knowledge of English-Speaking Countries.…”

“…Several research projects are being carried out to establish parameters for reliable interfaces that enable learners to interact appropriately during the testing experience (Chen, 2014;Dina & Ciornei, 2013;García-Laborda, 2009a;García-Laborda, Magal-Royo, de Siqueira Rocha, & Fernández Álvarez, 2010). That is why this study aims to contribute to the development of the state of the art in relation to the influence of computer-based oral English tests on test-takers' speaking performance.…”
