A proposition-based theorizing approach to hotel cancellation practices research

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to demonstrate how hospitality management research could benefit from the propositional style of theorizing, and how this approach could expand the scope of research in the discipline. Design/methodology/approach Developing new theories could provide unique insights and broaden the scope of research in hospitality management. To illustrate the power of proposition-based theorizing, this methodology is applied to the hotel cancellation policies domain. Findings Using the proposition-… Show more

“…A later industry report demonstrates that the cancellation arrangement is conditional based on diverse variables Utilizing the proposition-based theorizing within the setting of cancellation approaches, this study provides a few suggestions that seem have wide suggestions for future investigate. “…Member-member PD reflects an untouched yet practical situation in conducting the member-centered SPT task. Such an unexplored phenomenon regarding the situation of PD needs to be conceptualized and theorized first (Cornelissen, 2017; Riasi et al , 2018). With the aforementioned theoretical rationales, this study is suitable for adopting a propositional approach (Riasi et al , 2018; Akbar and Hoffmann, 2020; Nascimento et al , 2021).…”

“…Research on hotel cancellation policies is, however, rather scant and scattered. Previously published studies on hotel cancellation policies focused primarily on topics such as classification (Chen and Xie 2013), forecasting (Antonio et al 2017), mathematical modelling (Chen 2016), theorising (Riasi et al 2018), customer satisfaction (McCarthy and Fram 2000), fairness perception (Smith 2012;Smith et al 2015), purchase intention (Velten 2017) and deal-seeking behaviour (Chen et al 2011). This lack of attention is rather surprising given the topic's importance, and since hotel reservation cancellations are a variant of product returns (Chen et al 2011).…”

“…This connection to the larger issue of product returns, and the potential to enhance our understanding of cancellation policies, was ignored over the years as the vast majority of product return theories have not been used in the study of hotel reservation cancellations; thereby limiting the scope of research (Riasi et al 2017(Riasi et al , 2018. One possible explanation for this relative lack of academic research attention is the uncertainty regarding the state of hotel cancellation practices in the industry.…”
