A prospective multicenter study on mucormycosis in India: Epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment

Abstract: Mucormycosis due to Mucorales is reported at large numbers in uncontrolled diabetics across India, but systematic multicenter epidemiological study has not been published yet. The present prospective study was conducted at four major tertiary care centers of India (two in north and two in south India) during 2013-2015 to compare the epidemiology, treatment strategies and outcome of mucormycosis between the two regions. Molecular techniques were employed to confirm the identity of the isolates or to identify th… Show more

“…Risk factors for mucormycosis vary considerably by geographical area. In studies from Europe [10,14,27] the most common underlying disease was a hematological malignancy, while in India [5,11,20,29], Iran [29,31] and Mexico [12] it was diabetes mellitus. Diabetes was also the leading underlying condition in the study by Stemler et al in countries of the Middle East and North Africa [34].…”

“…7,[95][96][97][98] A recent meta-analysis of 600 publications from 2000 to 2017 comprising 851 cases of mucormycosis worldwide cited the following risk factors: DM (40%); trauma (33%); HemeM (32%); diabetic ketoacidosis (20%); neutropenia (20%); no underlying disease (18%); SOTR (14%); burns (11%); and natural disasters (5%). 20 In Asia, DM is the most common risk factor for mucormycosis, 20,67,99 whereas organ transplants and HemeM are more common in Europe and North America. 20…”

“…As such, the ECMM has recently begun a “neglected orphan disease guidance initiative” focusing on this disease both within and beyond the European region . Several previous studies have gathered data on mucormycosis in patients in Europe, Asia or other areas, but to date, there has been no comprehensive review of the literature on mucormycosis in South America. Here, we collate and review mucormycosis case studies reported in South American countries, exploring patient characteristics, course of infection, treatment regimens and clinical outcomes.…”
