“…This study was of short duration, namely, 5 h, making it difficult to generalize as to what the outcome would have been had the study had been carried out to 12-24 h. In addition, a more liberal definition of hyponatremia (serum sodium <137 mEq/L) was used, based on the reference range for the laboratory rather then the standard definition of <135 mEq/L. One could also argue that there was no absolute indication for intravenous fluids in this group of patients and that they may have fared equally well had no perioperative fluid been administered, but there is data to suggest that supplemental intravenous fluids do decrease post-operative nausea or vomiting in outpatient surgery [27]. The amount of fluid given in the study could also be considered excessive, with intravenous fluid rates exceeding by twofold the standard maintenance in some patients.…”
