A Protracted Course of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Encephalitis With Persistent Cerebrospinal Fluid Polymerase Chain Reaction Positivity Post Treatment

Abstract: Herpes simplex virus type 1 encephalitis presenting as an undulating course for more than two weeks prior to treatment. Despite 21 days of intravenous acyclovir, the virus remained detectable in the cerebrospinal fluid. The patient was treated with an additional 21 days of acyclovir with further improvement in mental status.
