A qualitative analysis of virtual patient descriptions in healthcare education based on a systematic literature review

Abstract: BackgroundVirtual Patients (VPs) have been in the focus of research in healthcare education for many years. The aim of our study was to analyze how virtual patients are described in the healthcare education literature, and how the identified concepts relate to each other.MethodsWe performed a literature review and extracted 185 descriptions of virtual patients from the articles. In a qualitative content analysis approach we inductively-deductively developed categories and deducted subcategories. We constructed… Show more

“…Furthermore, the influence of the IT sector on the field of medicine also opened up new possibilities for preparing patient information for medical students. A so‐called virtual patient consists of “medical case material” that has been compiled in order to help medical students improve their clinical reasoning skills . Virtual patient material can be presented in any form we consider suitable; currently, the most common form of presentation is the use of a computer program.…”

“…A so-called virtual patient consists of "medical case material" that has been compiled in order to help medical students improve their clinical reasoning skills. 21 Virtual patient material can be presented in any form we consider suitable; currently, the most common form of presentation is the use of a computer program. The virtual patient's story is either compiled using real patient files or made up using various types of available material.…”

“…VPs are a specific type of computer program that simulates real-life clinical scenarios where learners emulate the roles of healthcare providers to obtain a history, conduct a physical exam, and make diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in a safe space where deliberate practice is promoted, and where errors have no negative consequences on real patients [11,12]. VPs, like mannequins, are effective in addressing certain clinical skills, clinical decision making, teamwork and communication [11,12], but do not necessarily require co-location of students or even alteration of existing teaching timetables, since participation can occur at multiple points in the students' free time (the VP can be "visited" as one would visit a real patient in a real hospital ward). Furthermore, VPs are a natural supplement and adjunct to enhance existing use of mannequin-based simulation in healthcare, and can be incorporated at several time points in the curricula to better prepare students for mannequin-based or other types of IPL opportunities.…”
