A qualitative research on travellers' destination choice behaviour

Abstract: The repertory grid technique was used in this paper to investigate the decision‐making process of travellers. Results showed that both destination physical attributes and the travellers' feelings towards the destination play a significant role in the choice of holiday destinations. Notably, a distinct choice pattern emerged from the analysis, which showed some travellers begin their planning process not based on the destination features but on the availability of air tickets on sale. This observation suggested… Show more

“…In tourism academicians, tourists’ motivation to go to a specific destination and the reason they choose to travel are both topics of debate (Keshavarzian & Wu, 2017 ; Wong et al, 2017 ; Pereira et al, 2022 ; Katsikari et al, 2020 ; Luvsandavaajav & Narantuya, 2021 ). Travel motivation causes individuals to participate in tourist activities and compels travelers to take the required actions to satisfy their needs (Fodness, 1994 ; Pizam & Mansfeld ( 1999 )).…”

“…Figure 15 represents the key research clusters of major subject areas of the research in DC. First research cluster is DC conceptualization which has been further explained by highlighting the research papers which have used key theories in the subject area to conceptualize the DC (Keshavarzian & Wu, 2017;Yan & Zhou, 2019). Around 27% of research articles from the sample set conceptualize the construct of DC.…”

“…Recent studies, such as Oppewal, Huybers, and Crouch (2015) and Keshavarzian and Wu (2017), however, questioned the relevance of the funneling approach to the modern-day traveler and challenged the concept of linear funnel-like choice set approaches. These studies argued that with the abundance of information and the ease of access to it, holiday choice decisions are dynamic, individual, and evolving in line with the way that travelers research their holiday choices.…”

“…The findings of this study support the notion that travel decision making is complex and multifaceted. Both destination tourism features and transport factors play a significant role in shaping destination decisions: in particular, the influence of transport information on destination choice, when travelers may choose their destination depending on the airline campaigns and available airline ticket (Keshavarzian and Wu 2017). This gives rise to the necessity of close cooperation between destination marketers, transport bodies, and airline companies in the case of long-distance leisure travel.…”
