A Qualitative Study of Emotions Experienced by First-year Engineering Students during Programming Tasks

Abstract: In introductory computer programming courses, students experience a range of emotions. Students often experience anxiety and frustration when they encounter difficulties in writing programs. Continued frustration can discourage students from pursuing engineering and computing careers. Although prior research has shown how emotions affect students’ motivation and learning, little is known about students’ emotions in programming courses. In this qualitative study of first-year engineering students taking an intr… Show more

“…All program completers agreed or strongly agreed that they were employing more student-centered strategies and experiencing greater joy in teaching as their students deepened their learning and developed important abilities. The positive emotion suggests that the professors felt in control and valued the implemented activities and the results [61]. These faculty may become what Middleton et al [23] refer to as brokers, important in social networks and more powerful because they are in the same departments.…”

“…As future work, the authors propose to conduct new studies investigating the reasons why anxiety grows in programming tasks, analyzing its relation with students' perceived difficulty in writing reports and papers related to the programs they develop themselves [63] and [87], with the intrinsic difficulty of learning programming concepts in novice students.…”
