A quantitative animal model of traumatic iridodialysis

Abstract: The impact velocities and kinetic energies necessary to create a particular form of ocular injury, traumatic iridodialysis, were quantitatively studied by experimentally traumatizing enucleate porcine eyes. Thicknesses and tensile strengths of porcine and human iris tissue were measured in order to allow for predictions of human results to be made from the animal model. Application of blunt trauma at an impact angle of 30-35 degrees with respect to the iris plane with striking of the eye at the corneolimbal ju… Show more

“…When the eye is contused or the iris is accidentally engaged during an operation, separation occurs most frequently at this site. 1 Superior defects covered by a ptotic eyelid may be less symptomatic; however, an iridodialysis in any other quadrant can result in potentially debilitating visual sequelae, including monocular diplopia, glare, and photophobia.…”

“…Its pathogenesis is explained by the fact that the iris root is the thinnest and weakest portion of the iris stroma, hence more prone for detachment from the ciliary body after any traumatic insult having impact at the iris root. 1 A small localised and clinically insignificant (no diplopia or visual disturbances) iridodialysis may not require any surgical intervention. However, a large and clinically symptomatic iridodialysis often require surgical repair.…”

“…In literature, a number of surgical techniques have been described for the repair of symptomatic iridodialysis. [1][2][3][4][5][6] The coexistent zonular trauma may produce phacodonesis of the crystalline lens which should be taken care of. In this report, we describe a simple technique of repairing a large iatrogenic iridodialysis and implantation of a posterior-iris-fixated intraocular lens (IOL) in single-sitting.…”
