A Quantitative Method to Assess Freezing Resistance in Faba Beans

Abstract: In order to quantify freezing resistance (R50) of winter faba beans from a limited number of plants, leaves were exposed to artificial freezing stresses with different test temperatures (TTi). Injury (Ii) was assessed by rating (score: 0—8) and by conductivity measurements. The basic assumption that Ii depends almost linearly on TTi over a sufficiently broad range with a constant ΔI/ΔTT could be verified and hence a formula is presented to compute freezing resistance R50= (Ii—I50) ×ΔTT/ΔI + TTi with I50 being … Show more

“…Fircks and Verwijst (1993) suggested replacing Herzog's (1987) simple method for scoring frost damage on leaves with Richards' function (generalised logistic curve) as a tool for assessing frost resistance. Freezing temperature limits plant productivity and yield, with the rate of the temperature change and the duration of the exposure to freezing temperatures being important modifying factors (Fircks and Verwijst 1993).…”

“…Hardening is also well known as cold acclimation and results from exposure to low, nonfreezing temperatures. For faba bean, about 5 • C and short daylength (∼8-10 hours) were effective for hardening (Herzog 1987;Arbaoui and Link 2008).…”

“…To analyze freezing resistance, assessments may be made of freezing-induced electrolyte leakage (Herzog 1987), chlorophyll fluorescence (Taulavuori et al 2000), or accumulation of proline, of certain sugars or of membranebound polyunsaturated fatty acids (Arbaoui et al 2008a). Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) have been developed for freezing resistance and related traits in faba bean (Arbaoui and Link 2008) and also in the model legume Medicago truncatula (Avia and Lejeune-Hénaut 2007).…”
