An internal combustion engine modeling framework has been developed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment to allow engine component blocks to be connected in a physically representative manner to reduce the model build time. Each component block, derived from physical laws, interacts with other blocks according to block connection. In this series paper, detailed combustion modeling is presented among several engine subsystems. In the engine modeling framework, combustion is represented by a spherical flame propagating from the spark plug, and the burn rate is correlated to combustion chamber geometry, laminar flame speed, and turbulence. To accurately predict the burn rate, the quasi-dimensional model requires tuning. The combustion model has been computationally validated in a previous study and will be experimentally validated with real engine test data in the next series paper.
