A questionnaire study to evaluate the burnout syndrome and stress among dental students from two universities

Abstract: Background: Stress has been described as an epidemic of the 21 st century and even students are not exempted from this scenario. It is now well-established that dental students perceive and experience high levels of stress. Although some stress is inherent in dentistry and education and is likely to be beneficial as a learning stimulus, there is a concern that high levels of stress and prolonged stress exposure may precipitate burnout, a term that describes the experience of long-term work-related exhaustion a… Show more

“…More than half of the respondents never treated patients as impersonal objects, although around 40% believed that patients blame them for some of their personal problems. Postgraduates had significantly low depersonalization scores compared to other groups, consistent with some other studies [6,10,16]. Clinical experience gained in treating various types of patients over an extended period can be a reason for this finding.…”

“…Galan et al (2014) found no significant difference in educational burnout of male and female dental students [20]. Rajpurohit et al (2015) evaluated burnout syndrome in dental students of two universities using MBI-SS questionnaire and found no significant difference between males and females [27]. Their finding was in line with ours which indicates that stresses of girls competing with boys no longer exist and females now have an equal performance with males in fields in which, males used to be dominant [24].…”

“…To put it more clearly, burnout is an individual's reaction to themself, the job, and the work environment, depending on the feeling of difficulty and inability to fulfil their duties and responsibilities related to their job. Although burnout is seen as a problem experienced by employees regarding the factors in the work and work environment, it has recently emerged as a similar situation in students (Kwak, Ji, Baek, & Baek, 2020;Rajpurohit, Ankola, Hebbal, & Mehta, 2015;Sufia & Latif, 2016). This situation that students experience concerning the school is expressed specifically with the concept of school burnout (Almašiová, Kohútová, & Budniak, 2019;Kiuru, Aunola, Nurmi, Leskinen, & Salmela-Aro, 2008;Onuaoha, 2015;Salmela-Aro, Kiuru, Leskinen, & Nurmi, 2009;Tomaszek & Muchacka-Cymerma, 2019).…”
