A radiographic survey of periapical conditions in elderly people in a Swedish county population

Abstract: A random sample of non‐institutionalized people aged 65 years and over in Örebro County, Sweden, were examined radiographically. Periapical conditions and the prevalence and quality of root fillings were evaluated. Approximately every 10th tooth showed radiographic signs of apical periodontitis: more than 1 in 20 teeth not previously root‐filled and more than 1 in 4 root‐filled teeth. Only 28% of the subjects had no tooth with periapical destruction. In all, 18% of the teeth were root‐filled: 27% of maxillary … Show more

“…The prevalence of both periapical radiolucencies and endodontically treated teeth in our study was comparable to that of other investigations (5,16,22,29) of elderly populations mainly from Scandinavia. In these studies, the prevalence of teeth with a periapical radiolucency varied from 4.1 to 9.8%, whereas the prevalence of endodontically treated teeth ranged from 5.5 to 26% ( Table 5).…”

“…It is well documented that the quality of the root filling is important to the long-term success of endodontic treatment (5,11,16,22,29,31,32). A proper seal and a root filling ending less than 2 mm from the apex has been shown to be an important endodontic treatment outcome criterion.…”

“…When sub-divided by whether the teeth are mandibular or maxillary, our data regarding the frequency of AP and endodontically treated teeth are comparable with those of other studies [37]. These studies found no difference between the maxilla and the mandible in the average percentage of teeth with AP, yet the percentage of endodontically treated maxillary teeth was twice that of endodontically treated mandibular teeth.…”

“…Several studies of the oral radiographic findings in the elderly have been performed in Scandinavia during recent years (16)(17)(18)(19)(20). In Finland, radiographic studies of the oral health status and the need for treatment of the non-institutionalized elderly have mainly concerned the need for prosthetic treatment (21)(22)(23).…”
