A randomised controlled study of mouth swab testing versus same day blood tests for HIV infection in young people attending a community drug service

Abstract: An oral swab test in the community for blood borne virus testing leads to an increase in the number of young high-risk people tested for blood borne infections and is associated with a trend towards higher rates of subsequent attendance for STI screening.

“…one evaluated an online web-based intervention that provided information in the form of individualized advice in personalized emails (19), one employed one-to-one counselling (14) , one used video (15) and two included home-based STI test kits (13,28). One of these studies was of notably high quality with no risk of bias and both provided information, including information about testing (13).…”

“…6 Despite the mandatory nature of the current screening program, NY State has not dedicated resources to support HIV screening. Third, use of rapid HIV cheek swab might be more appealing to patients, 30 and could be performed by staff dedicated for this purpose. Rapid bedside oral testing was not chosen in these two EDs primarily because of the need to train many providers, including those who rotate through the ED.…”

“…In a small UK study, young people attending a community drug service were randomized to receive HIV, hepatitis B and C virus testing using blood tests or oral swabs; uptake rates were significantly higher in those randomized to oral swabs (HIV: 100 vs 18.5%; hepatitis C: 100 vs 7.4%; hepatitis B: 92.6 vs 7.4%) [92], suggesting that noninvasive sampling may play a role in difficult-to-test populations.…”
