“…Small and frequently poorly designed studies have recently suggested that therapy of mildly elevated blood pressure may prevent progression to preeclampsia. 58,59 Even for women with blood pressure elevation sufficient to justify therapy for their own benefit, it is not clear whether treatment is beneficial or detrimental for the fetus. In several studies, treatment of hypertensive women resulted in an increased risk of growth restriction in their infants.…”

“…4 In clinical trials, the benefits of antihypertensive treatment in PIH have been inconsistent. [5][6][7][8][9] The choice of antihypertensive drugs in pregnancy is often limited due to fetal safety concerns. Three antihypertensive drugsnifedipine, methyldopa and labetalol have been demonstrated to be safe for use in the pregnant women and are commonly used for the management of various hypertensive disorders during pregnancy.…”

“…Hydralazine and oral nifedipine have been traditionally used in pregnancy induced hypertension. However, recent data suggests the use of IV labetalol or nicardipine, both of which are easily titratable, to be safe and efficacious in PIH [54][55][56][57].…”
