A randomized comparison of plateletpheresis with the same donors using four blood separators at a single blood center

Abstract: At one blood center, each of 20 donors underwent plateletpheresis on four blood cell separators in random order. We compared the CS3000+, Amicus V 2.41, MCS Plus, and Spectra LRS V 7 Turbo regarding platelet (PLT) yield, pre- and post-procedure PLT counts, percent fall in donor PLT count, process time, efficiency, PLT product and donor PLT volume (MPV). Using >or= 150 x 10(9) PLTs/L pre-donation counts, a goal was set of 4.5 x 10(11) PLTs unit in up to 100 minutes processing time. Results were (mean values) PL… Show more

“…Analyzing the procedure details in donors with platelet count of 150 3 10 9 /L (Table III), none developed thrombocytopenia or donor reaction. The percentage fall in platelet count varied from 10 to 29.3% in our study that has been described from 10-20% [10] to 24-32% [11] and even up to 45% [12] in the literature, with least fall in platelet count with Amicus V 2.41 [11]. However, the yield of the obtained products was not satisfactory in the present study.…”

“…The mean percent reduction in PLT ct on Amicus, CS and Cobe was 31.9, 27.3 and 31.2% respectively as compared to Tenorio et al . [6] where it was 24, 30, and 32%. The drop in blood count was not high enough to cause any clinical problems for the donors.…”

“…Currently, many alternative methods for the preparation of PCs exist and are in use 2‐4 . One option is random donor PLT concentrates derived from whole‐blood (WB) donations by pooling buffy coats (BCs).…”
