A randomized controlled trial comparing the clinical efficacy and cost-effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and integrated EMDR-Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) in the treatment of patients with post-traumatic stress disorder and comorbid (Sub)clinical borderline personality disorder: study design

Abstract: Background: Comorbidity between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is high. There is growing motivation among clinicians to offer PTSD treatmentssuch as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)-to patients with PTSD and comorbid BPD. However, a large subgroup with comorbid BPD does not sufficiently respond to PTSD treatment and is more likely to be excluded or to dropout from treatment. Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) for BPD is well established and a… Show more

“…A third study of an intervention combining an evidence-based PTSD psychotherapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, EMDR) with DBT is underway at the time of this review, in a randomized clinical trial with patients with PTSD and comorbid full and subthreshold BPD [ 157 ]. Thus, the three most extensively tested approaches to PTSD psychotherapy (EX, CT, and EMDR) have been systematically integrated with DBT.…”

“…The treatment protocol is described more detailed in [ 61 , 62 ], but described here briefly. Patients in the TFT condition will receive EMDR (PTSD+BPD) or ImRs (PTSD+CPD) for a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 18 sessions, delivered within 6 months.…”

“…Patients will be randomized equally to ImRs only or integrated ImRs and ST. The study is embedded within a larger study project on treatment efficacy, working mechanisms and prediction of treatment outcome for those with PTSD and comorbid borderline PD or CPD ( 54 , 66 ). The study protocol has been approved by the regional Medical Ethics Committee and will be conducted in accordance with the Dutch Medical Research Involving Human Subjects Act.…”

“…The present study addresses these knowledge gaps by comparing treatment efficacy and cost-effectiveness of trauma focused treatment (ImRs) with integrated ImRs and PD focused treatment (ST). In a parallel trial, the treatment efficacy and cost-effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) will be compared with integrated EMDR and dialectical behavior therapy in PTSD and comorbid borderline PD ( 54 ).…”
