“…In addition, efficacy of other therapeutic modalities such as photodynamic therapy (PDT), topical azole agents, herbal extracts, and zinc sulfate (ZnSO 4 ) in the treatment of acute Old World CL have been studied in several clinical trials. [3][4][5][6][7] However, intralesional or systemic administration of antimonial compounds (sodium stibogluconate, meglumine antimonies) are still considered to be the standard treatment of CL. 8 A proposed mechanism of action for therapeutic modalities that have been used in the treatment of acute Old World CL is presented in Table I.…”

“…This can be explained by the difference of conventional treatment and pharmacological kinetics of paromomycin and PI, when time of applications is short with PI. Larbi et al (1995) found that the topical treatment was effective against CL in Saudi Arabia using creams containing 1% clotrimazole and miconazole 2% in a randomized, double-blind clinical study. In this study, they observed that clotrimazole was the most efficient in reducing injuries, but it was still very limited for use in the treatment of leishmaniasis, with parasites still at the end of treatment.…”

“…The results indicated that 15.7% of lesions treated with clotrimazole fully healed, and none of the lesions treated with miconazole healed when assessed at 30 days. 61 On the other hand, ketoconazole cream was shown to be ineffective when it was used for the treatment of Saudi patients with CL. 34 El-On et al 62,63 carried out clinical trials on 100 patients with CL of 4-6 years' duration.…”
