A randomized evaluation of simulation training on performance of vascular anastomosis on a high-fidelity in vivo model: The role of deliberate practice

Abstract: Residents who had the opportunity for self-directed simulator practice performed an end-to-side anastomosis more adeptly, more quickly, and with a higher quality end product. The results of this randomized trial suggest that independent training on a procedural trainer did transfer to improved performance in an operating room environment. Simulator training should be incorporated into cardiovascular surgical curricula and residents should have access to this modality for independent after-hours practice to imp… Show more

“…2,4,11 Another relevant fact related to this method is that the handling techniques and skills acquired can be applied to other suture techniques, such as intestinal anastomoses; although it is unlikely to be possible to achieve the two suture layers generally used in this type of anastomosis. 12 One of the limitations of using these vegetable models is that an objective assessment cannot be made of the quality of the distance between stitches, since, in contrast with in vivo models in which coagulation occurs between sutures, in the vegetable model there will always be leakage between sutures, so this cannot be used to determine whether the distance between stitches is correct.…”

“…In the modern multistep approach, trainees can usually start in vivo training after obtaining the basic knowledge and skills [31]. The use of in vivo models has been explored in detail, resulting in vast literature introducing different techniques to improve training protocols and reduce the use of living subjects [32, 33].…”
