A randomized study comparing IVF in the unstimulated cycle with IVF following clomiphene citrate

Abstract: The efficiency of IVF in unstimulated cycles was compared with that following ovarian stimulation with clomiphene citrate in a simple protocol with ultrasound monitoring only. A total of 132 couples with no previous IVF attempts, selected by female age <35 years, indication for intracytoplasmic sperm injection or infertility caused by tubal factor or unexplained infertility were randomized to the two protocols. Randomization yielded two comparable groups. The clomiphene group (68 couples) performed significant… Show more

“…In contrast to the natural cycle IVF, where patients are aware that development of only one follicle is expected, the aim of our programme was to obtain at least two or three oocytes. With a single follicle, a higher possibility of non-retrieval or fertilization failure exists (Lashen et al, 1999;Ingerslev et al, 2001). We decided not to subject our financially constrained couples to the disappointment of a post-retrieval failure with its attendant cost implications.…”

“…Different stimulation protocols have been described, including minimal, modified natural, friendly IVF, mini-IVF, and mild stimulation (5,(20)(21)(22)(23). This array of terminologies and protocols led to the formation of ISMAAR-the International Society for Mild Approaches in Assisted Reproduction-which has the goal of developing a universally accepted definition of mild stimulation for clinical practice and research publications (8).…”
