A randomized trial comparing primary infarct artery stenting with or without abciximab in acute myocardial infarction

Abstract: Abciximab plus IRA stenting should be considered the routine reperfusion strategy in patients with AMI undergoing primary percutaneous mechanical revascularization, especially in high-risk patients.

“…Stroke data were available for 5 studies and was not significantly different between GPIs and control (RR = 0.37; 95% CI, 0.13-1.08; P = 0.068). 6,15,17,25,28,30 All-Cause Mortality The incidence of mortality at 30 days was 2.2% with GPIs versus 2.9% with control (RR = 0.79; 95% CI, 0.59-1.06; P = 0.12) (Figure 4). Publication bias was not detected (Begg's test P = 0.72, Egger's test P = 0.97) and heterogeneity was not observed (I 2 = 0%).…”

“…6 -10 In recent years, important advances in the treatment of infarction have been introduced and an aggressive therapy, based on direct percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stenting plus abciximab administration, is currently the most advanced approach to infarct treatment. [11][12][13][14] Although ST-segment resolution has been used to test these new therapeutic strategies, its relation to objective parameters of treatment results in the patient population has not been examined. This study evaluated the accuracy of the simplest and quickest approach to ST-segment elevation analysis, i.e., single-lead analysis before and 30 minutes after PCI, 4 in characterizing the outcome of patients with acute myocardial infarction and who underwent early PCI with direct stenting and adjunctive abciximab therapy, using as the reference 1-month scintigraphic infarct size and left ventricular ejection fraction (EF).…”

“…Abciximab enhanced myocardial salvage when used in conjunction with PCI in patients with acute STEMI presenting within 12 hours. 25,26 An interesting and not fully understood finding of this study is that myocardial salvage was also evidenced in the patients who underwent conservative treatment, although half as much as in patients who received mechanical reperfusion. Specifically, in patients treated conservatively, the salvage index values showed that one fifth to one fourth of the area at risk was salvaged.…”
