“…They were the VeinViewer [1, 66] (Christie Medical Holdings, Memphis, TN, USA), VascuLuminator [67] (De Koningh Medical Systems, Arnhem, NL), and AccuVein [68] (AccuVein LLC, Cold Spring Harbor, NY, USA). The VeinViewer was approved for use by the FDA in 2005 [66]. The AccuVein (AV300) was approved by the FDA in 2009 [69] and it is regarded as the first hand-held NIR device.…”

“…Phipps et al [66], in another study that assessed peripheral intravenous catheter insertion carried out by a neonatal nursing team in preterm and term neonates, reported that patients of similar gestational age had a higher success of IV placement associated with the use of the VeinViewer (adjusted odds ratio: 3.05).…”

“…The technology is used for assistance with IV placement or dialysis access. The VeinViewer led to significantly greater likelihood of line placement in infants [13]. This same technology has recently been adopted for microsurgical varicocelectomy for the identification of small diameter veins.…”

“…Whereas the VeinViewer and AccuVein both generate images from reflected NIR radiation, the VascuLuminator illuminates the subject's limb from behind with a high power NIR light emitting diode (LED) while an image is formed from the diffusely transmitted light. The VeinViewer was assessed as an aid for inserting peripheral catheters in neonates by Phipps et al,4 who concluded that the device was significantly more likely to lead to successful placement. A somewhat less positive assessment of the VeinViewer was conducted by Chapman et al 5 who performed a trial on 323 children up to 17 years of age; the only potential benefit was noted for infants less than 2 years old.…”
