A rapid method for estimating the median diameter of the stem profile of Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst) trees

Abstract: The median diameter of a longitudinal section of the stem may be used to determine the stem volume. However, to calculate stem volume, many measurements of diameter at different heights along the stem are required. Therefore, this approach is not generally applied because time-consuming and expensive. Here, we propose a novel, more rapid method to obtain median diameter using the area of the stem profile. A total of 218 height/diameter classes from more than 5000 spruce trees (Picea abies Karst.) were used to … Show more

“…Intense competition among neighbouring trees forces them to prioritise height over diameter growth to compete for sunlight, resulting in larger height-to-diameter ratios in more competitive stands. This has been confirmed for different species of Chinese fir, Engelmann spruce [126,127], Betula pendula Roth and B. pubescens Ehrh [128], Norway spruce [129], and Sitka spruce [21]. Aside from tree diameter and height, the crown characteristics are important, as they affect the projected area that the wind 'sees' [130] and the tree dynamic response, and therefore control the wind loading on the tree [86,113].…”

“…The volume estimated by the proxy function is changed by the ratio of the actual crosssectional area at a randomly chosen point on the log to the anticipated cross-sectional area at that point. VASILESCU et al (2017), on the other hand, created the Centroid technique (Centroid Sampling), a version of Importance Sampling, for calculating log, merchantable volume, and total tree volumes. Certain studies found that Centroid Sampling yielded more reliable results for several tree species than other common formulae (e.g., Huber, Smalian, and Newton-Riecke).…”
