A rapid T1 mapping method for assessment of murine kidney viability using dynamic manganese‐enhanced magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract: Dynamic MEMRI by MSRFSE detected decreased cellular viability and discerned the regional responses to RAS. This technique may provide a valuable tool for noninvasive evaluation of renal viability. Magn Reson Med 80:190-199, 2018. © 2017 International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

“…This might have been masked by the increased fluid content because of tubular dilation, as indicated by the elevated T 1 (3). A similar increase in kidney water content has been reported in FA-induced nephropathy (21) as well as other kidney diseases, including renal artery stenosis (11,14) and ischemia-reperfusion injury (10,24). The increased fluid content in the kidney might also have hampered the ability of MTI in detecting mild renal fibrosis, especially in the medulla.…”

“…This study was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at our institution. Fifteen 10 week‐old male 129S1 mice underwent either sham ( n = 7) or RAS ( n = 8) surgeries on the right kidneys, as described previously 12,20–23 . Briefly, animals were maintained under anesthesia with 1.75% isoflurane mixed with O 2 .…”

“…A 10‐msec long adiabatic pulse (sech80) was used for nonselective inversion of magnetization. To ensure a high signal‐to‐noise ratio, a centric encoding scheme was implemented 22 . Other imaging parameters were: TR, 18 sec; TE, 4.9 msec; RARE factor, 16; recovery times, 0.023, 0.5, 1, 2, and 15 sec; number of averages, 1.…”

“…In ischemic mouse kidneys, this technique revealed decreased cellular viability. 58 This technique may afford noninvasive evaluation of renal viability, but it is limited by toxicity that prohibits clinical translation.…”
