A Rare Case of Acute Pericarditis Due to SARS-CoV-2 Managed With Aspirin and Colchicine

Abstract: SARS-CoV-2 infection presents with predominant respiratory illness. Cardiac injury has been reported in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The spectrum of cardiac involvement ranges from pericarditis to myocarditis. Acute pericarditis attributed to SARS-CoV-2 is rare. A 68-year-old male with co-morbid condition of hypertension and arthritis presented with chest tightness, cough and exertional shortness of breath for five days. “…A multitude of international clinical trials also indicates that colchicine poses improved outcomes for SARS-COV2 pericarditis specifically [14]. A successful response to colchicine and concomitant aspirin therapy are also noted from recent case reports in addition to the case presented above [15]. Steroidal therapy is contraindicated in patients with pericarditis, due to concerns for an increased risk of recurrence [16].…”

“…Unless formal anticoagulation is indicated, (per guidelines contingent upon D-Dimer levels), we recommend 1 baby aspirin daily (81 mg) for purposes of reducing clot and sludging via platelet inhibition (unless aspirin in the patient is contraindicated). [68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77]…”
