A rare case of aortic dissection presenting as pure transient global amnesia

Abstract: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a well-described neurological phenomenon. Clinically, it manifests with the sudden onset of a paroxysmal, transient loss of anterograde memory and disorientation but with intact consciousness. Typically, symptoms last for only a few hours. We present an unusual case of aortic dissection presenting with pure TGA in a patient, who had a positive outcome. This is the second case report of a patient with aortic dissection presenting with pure TGA syndrome, but it is the first case… Show more

“…Timely ED detection of the seldom encountered, but highly lethal, condition of thoracic AoD is critical yet challenging given the considerable range of symptomatology 1–5 . Our case provides a very rare description of painless AoD presenting as pure TGA, which has only been communicated in a few previous reports 6–12 . Emergency physicians should specifically recognize thoracic AoD as a potential underlying etiology of TGA‐like syndromes.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] Our case provides a very rare description of painless AoD presenting as pure TGA, which has only been communicated in a few previous reports. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] Emergency physicians should specifically recognize thoracic AoD as a potential underlying etiology of TGA-like syndromes. The use of FOCUS in evaluating undifferentiated hypotension and a multitude of cardiovascular emergencies including AoD has been well-described.…”

“…So far, nine cases with acute ADA and amnesia have been described, as listed in the table. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Six of these nine patients experienced anterograde amnesia in the form of a TGA. However, in none of the previously published cases, an activity associated with increased intrathoracic pressure has been reported.…”
