A Rare Case of Non-Immune Hydrops fetalis: Double-Chambered Right Ventricle

Abstract: A double-chambered right ventricle was diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound examination in a case of fetal hydrops and polyhydramnios. Delivery was induced at the 28th week. 2D echocardiography of the newborn confirmed the intrauterine diagnosis. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of prenatally diagnosed divided right ventricle, causing hydrops.

“…In one case, the infant survived and subsequently underwent surgery. The other case describes a clinical course similar to ours: the fetus also had an intact ventricular septum, developed fetal hydrops and died of cardiac insufficiency after delivery17. Apparently, obstructing right ventricular muscle bundles in the presence of an intact ventricular septum leads to a much more profound disturbance of fetal hemodynamics.…”

“…The prognosis following surgical correction, which is now generally performed by a transatrial approach, is excellent12, 13, 16, with long‐term disease‐free survival approaching 100%. Interestingly, antenatal diagnosis is exceedingly rare, with only two prenatally diagnosed cases reviewed in the literature11, 17. In one case, the infant survived and subsequently underwent surgery.…”

“…U ovom se trenutku nijedan od naših bolesnika ne žali na znatnije tegobe (tablica 2.). 6,18 naši su bolesnici bili u dobi između 2 i 11 godina. Svi su imali pridružen vSD, što je u skladu s podatcima iz literature, gdje se vSD nalazi između 63 i 96% slučajeva.…”
