A Rare Case of Recurrent Klebsiella pneumoniae Liver Abscess

Abstract: Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess (KPLA) is an emerging syndrome with the initial cases described in Taiwan in the 1980s. There is high mortality with this condition, and immediate aggressive treatment is necessary. Diabetes mellitus (D.M.) is the single most important risk factor for developing KPLA. Here, we describe a rare case of recurrent cryptogenic Klebsiella pneumoniae pyogenic liver abscess (KPLA) in a young man with poorly controlled type 1 D.M.

“…There are several studies and case reports in humans of hepatic abscess recurrence following percutaneous or surgical drainage, which were resolved with repeated drainage or hepatectomy and appropriate antimicrobial therapy. [3][4][5][6][7][8] A study by Mohsen et al reported that the primary predictor of recurrence of abscesses in people was underlying malignancy. 8 Wang et al found an association in people between the recurrence of a hepatic abscess caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae and extended spectrum β-lactamase production.…”

There are several studies and case reports in humans of hepatic abscess recurrence following percutaneous or surgical drainage, which were resolved with repeated drainage or hepatectomy and appropriate antimicrobial therapy 3–8 . A study by Mohsen et al.…”
