The other clinically relevant group is non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS); although they generally cause a self-limiting gastroenteritis, they can cause invasive disease, such as bacteremia [ 5 ], lesions [ 6 ] or osteomyelitis [ 1 ]. The reporting of Salmonella isolated from human clinical diagnostic samples in public health laboratories is mandatory under national legislation, and the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Gastrointestinal Bacteria Reference Unit (GBRU) receives approximately 10,000 presumptive Salmonella isolates each year from diagnostic microbiology laboratories, private laboratories, industry and food, water and environmental (FW&E) laboratories for confirmation of the identity and typing [ 7 , 8 ].…”
