A Rare Cause of Intra Cavernous Internal Carotid Artery Dissection: Sturge Weber Syndrome

Abstract

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a rare neurocutaneous disease characterized with a port-wine stain and ipsilateral leptomeningeal angiomas. It may cause wide variety of neurological signs and symptoms. A 63-year-old female patient with a port-wine stain on her face was followed up in our department symptoms of transient ischemic attack and focal epileptic seizures at 2-year intervals. The investigation of the cause of the transient ischemic attacks showed dissection of the right cavernous internal carotid artery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case in the literature. In advanced age, as in our case, central nervous system involvement could be related to congenital abnormalities of the vascular bed.
