A Rare Complication of Calcaneal Fracture – Calcaneal Non-Union. Case Report

Abstract: The aim was to study published reports of postoperative intra-articular calcaneus fractures non-union complications after ORIF, determinate the main reasons for such complications and study the ways to improve the treatment results/ We retrospectively studied anamnestic data, medical history from 2018, and the treatment process of our patient in 2019- 2020 with calcaneus ORIF post-operative non-union. The patient was managed by secondary ORIF with autogenous bone marrow grafting after removal of broken retaine… Show more

“…However, several previous studies have stated that for intraarticular calcaneal fractures, anatomical correction is better by using operative management than non-operative management because of better functional outcome [5] , shorter absence from work [7] , and restored to a normal range motion [1] , [18] . In contrast, studies reported that operative management increased infection risk5, and it can also be a non-union [19] , even though it is a rare complication.…”

“…Physically fit and active males are the most vulnerable to calcaneal fractures [1]. According to Essex-Lopresti, 75-92% of calcaneal fractures involve a fracture line that runs through the articular surface and are classified as intra-articular fractures with an impression-shifting nature.…”

“…The uncommon consequences of calcaneal nonunion following management have been mentioned in only a small number of case reports and their successful management. Restoration of axial alignment and joint congruence, with careful caution toward soft tissues, is the basic principle of treatment [1].…”
