A rare presentation of dens invaginatus in a mandibular lateral incisor occurring concurrently with bilateral maxillary dens invaginatus: Case report and review of literature

Abstract: Background: Dens Invaginatus (DI), commonly known as dens in dente, is a developmental malformation of tooth that most commonly affects permanent maxillary lateral incisor teeth. Deciduous teeth are infrequently affected. Presence of DI in mandibular permanent teeth is extremely rare. Further, the presence of DI bilaterally in the maxillary lateral incisors of the same patient is even more unusual. Methods: In this article, an unusual case of DI affecting a mandibular lateral incisor tooth is described. This m… Show more

“…The classical radiographic appearance of coronal DI is a pear shaped invagination of enamel and dentin with a narrow constriction at the opening on the surface of the tooth. The infolding of the enamel lining is more radio-opaque than the surrounding tooth structure aiding easy identification [50].…”

Oehlers 4 DI'u invajinasyon derinliğine göre 3 grup altında sınıflandırmıştır: Tip 1: Mine sement birleşimini geçmeyen, kron ile sınırlı invajinasyonun minör formu Tip 2: Mine sement sınırını geçen fakat kök içerisinde kalan, kör boşluğun olduğu invajinasyon…”

“…It is seen predominantly in the maxilla and the most commonly affected tooth is the maxillary lateral incisor, followed by the maxillary central incisor, premolar, canine and molar (3). It usually occurs unilaterally, but bilateral cases have also been reported (4). Occurrence of dens invaginatus in mandibular teeth is very rare.…”
