A Rare Presentation of Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor in the Nasolabial Fold

Abstract: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a benign lesion that occurs most frequently in the soft tissues and viscera. In the head and neck region, the tumor has been reported to occur in the orbit, tongue, nasopharynx, larynx, and paranasal sinuses and the central nervous system. Despite being a benign lesion, it exhibits infiltrative and destructive behaviours, making histopathological examination necessary to confirm the diagnosis. We report the case of a 38-year-old female presented with a right nasolabi… Show more

“…IMT located in the head and neck regions is tremendously rare. From the extrapulmonary cases, 11% have been found in the upper respiratory tract, involving larynx, trachea, oropharynx, and nasopharynx around 5% of the cases involve the orbits, paranasal sinuses, major salivary glands, thyroid, and soft tissue in descending order of frequency [ 2 ]. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first subcutaneous IMT reported in this location.…”

“…IMT was previously believed to be benign inflammatory lesions, but more recently, their neoplastic origin is invariably accepted due to their high rate of local recurrence, distant metastasis, and acquired chromosomal abnormalities. Due to these characteristics, the World Health Organization (WHO) states an IMT as an intermediate soft tissue tumor that is composed of myofibroblast-differentiated spindle cells accompanied by numerous inflammatory cells, plasma cells, and/or lymphocytes [ 2 ].…”

“…This case report complies with the SCARE guidelines and has been reported in line with the SCARE checklist [1] . Inflammatory pseudo-tumours (IPTs) are rare mesenchymal masses that occur in <0.0001% of the population [2] , [3] , [4] . First described as IPTs in 1954 by Uniker and Iversion [4] , these tumours are benign lesions associated with non-specific inflammatory cellular infiltration with spindle-cell proliferation and are often reactive, infective, or immunological in nature [5] .…”
