Biofilm formation, which is a different form of defensive growth of bacteria, is an important protection mechanism of most of the microorganisms. It plays an important role in the pathogenesis of foreign body infections. The problem will certainly increase with more liberal use of foreign bodies. Despite recent advances in understanding the pathologic mechanisms and other consequences and developments in the prevention of biofilm formation, more research endeavor are needed. The prevention of biofilm related infections is vital in today's medical science.
