A Re-Evaluation of the Morphology of a Bicontinuous Block Copolymer−Ceramic Material

Abstract: The structures of a poly(isoprene-block-ethylene oxide) (PI-b-PEO) block copolymer-directed aluminosilicate mesostructure and the resulting ceramic material obtained from calcination were studied via smallangle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The PI minority phase (volume fraction 0.36) formed a continuous network of channels, previously reported 1,2 to be consistent with the plumber's nightmare 3 morphology. The solvent casting process used to form the material caused it to… Show more

“…This effect was likely exacerbated by the relatively small O fraction of the ISO polymers used in this study as well as the increased unit cell size at high oxide loadings. For comparison, such O+oxide majority network phases for IO diblock copolymers are know to form under a narrow set of conditions including a larger 32 vol% O 31, 39. Furthermore, the stability of ISO-oxide network phases may be rationalized in terms of the increased polydispersity of the combined O+oxide domain.…”

“…In addition, ac ast film of mesoporous aluminosilicate also shows a uniaxial contraction of about 30 %b roken cubic symmetry. [124] In addition, mesoporous hemisphere particles are designed by interface tension-induced shrinkage. [125] As-made core-shell polymers@SiO 2 can be used as ap recursor material.…”

“…The additional peak found at 2 suggests that the gyroid structure is slightly distorted. The appearance of these otherwise forbidden reflections are due to uniaxial contraction of the morphology during solvent casting, causing both the {110} (√2) and {200} (√4, left shoulder of √6 peak) Bragg reflections to become visible …”
