A reanalysis of the highly important metabolic ward feeding data of Hall and colleagues: a brief report

Abstract: Background & AimsThere is an ongoing debate about the role of macronutrient distribution in weight management. The purpose of this brief report is to reanalyze the metabolic ward feeding data of Hall et al. (Cell Metab. 2015 Sep 1;22(3):427-36). ResultsI inevitably came to the conclusion that these diligent and well-meaning researchers were misinterpreting the research data. Their data actually demonstrate that a carbohydrate restricted diet show no risk of body fat accumulation. ConclusionThe purpose is not … Show more

“…Perhaps the best controlled experiment performed in a metabolic ward is that of Hall and co-workers [10]. The results of this study are also in full agreement with the mass balance approach; two separate articles have been published on the subject, i.e., [4] and [14], so it will not be discussed further in this article.…”

“…In studies where a low-carbohydrate diet has not been more effective in terms of fat loss, EBT-based calculation formulas have been used, which give incorrect results (e.g., 10; see reanalysis in [14]). Such points are very important to consider when reading these reports.…”

“…A flawed paradigm, however, almost always leads to incorrect interpretations and conclusions. There are many research reports in which the more effective weight loss effect of a low-carbohydrate diet compared to an isocaloric high-carbohydrate diet is attributed to a methodological error (e.g., underreporting of food consumption, low sensitivity of research In studies where a low-carbohydrate diet has not been more effective in terms of fat loss, EBT-based calculation formulas have been used, which give incorrect results (e.g., 10; see reanalysis in [14]).
