We explore how being named the top party school by the Princeton Review affects the U.S. News and World Report peer rankings as well as the academic profile of a university. We find that being named the top party school lowers peer rankings, freshman retention, and the academic quality of incoming students at a university. However, we also find that being named a top party school has no effect on an institution's acceptance rate. These results suggest that the publicity of being named the top party school in the nation enhances a school's undesirable reputation as measured by peer ranking, and also negatively influences student enrollment decisions, particularly among top academic performing students.

College rankings have played a pivotal part in the higher education sector and continue to be an annual focus during the student application and admissions process. From determining the college choice process for anxious seniors to influencing budgets of university departments, the rise and fall on the rankings make a significant impact. With the increasing reliance of electronic sources for news about university choice and the higher education industry, rankings will continue to influence the university sector. Yet, confusion exists as to which university ranking system should be followed, their methodologies and what that says about a university, and whether a university ranking list can be trusted and how to use it for postsecondary futures. This chapter dives into the history of university rankings to frame the current context, followed by a thorough analysis of the existing ranking systems and their methodologies. Lastly, the guide showcases how schools, university counselors, and prospective families can utilize rankings to aid them in the postsecondary preparation process.
