A reassessment of the foliose Bangiales (Rhodophyta) in the Balearic Islands including the proposed synonymy of Pyropia olivii with Pyropia koreana

Abstract: A taxonomic reevaluation of the foliose Bangiales placed in the genus Porphyra from the Balearic Islands, based on the historical and recent collections, has resulted in a new floristic composition of this group. The molecular, morphological, and karyological analysis reveals that for these islands, there are no Porphyra species, and only two members of the genus Pyropia are present: Pyropia elongata and Pyropia koreana . The sequence data of the rbc L plastid gene indicate that Pyropia olivii and Pyropia kore… Show more

“…Oh & I.K. Lee (Brodie et al 2007;Vergés et al 2013). Similarly, molecular analysis of cultures from the He and Yarish (2006) P. leucosticta study suggests that they were actually using Pyropia yezoensis, an Asian species introduced to Long Island Sound sometime after 1970 (Neefus et al 2008).…”

“…Porphyra olivii which was originally described as a new cryptic species from the Mediterranean Sea (Brodie et al, 2007), but which turned out to be conspecific with an Asian species currently known as Pyropia koreana (Verges et al, 2013). The development of molecular markers over the last 10 years has resulted in DNA barcoding approaches being used as a routine tool to complement morphological identifications during surveys and censuses (e.g.…”

“…Although the majority of thalli found to date in New Zealand fall within the size range reported from Korea, larger thalli are also present (up to 26 cm in height). Vergés et al (2013) compared the reported dimensions and habitat of Py. koreana from the Balearic Islands, with published data from Korea and for Py.…”

“…In Korea, this species is known from the eastern coast, with specimens collected in an estuarine area growing in the shallow subtidal zone (Hwang and Lee 1994, 2001, Kim and Kim 2011. As part of a major revision of the order Bangiales, Sutherland et al (2011) Vergés et al (2013) investigated foliose Bangiales in the Balearic Islands (western Mediterranean Sea), and concluded that the species Pyropia olivii (Orfandis, Neefus & T. L. Bray) J. Brodie & Neefus was conspecific with Py. koreana, and occurred on Majorca Island.…”
