A redescription of Trypanosoma cotti Brumpt and Lebailly, 1904 and its development in the leech, Calliobdella punctata

Abstract: Summary.Trypanosoma cotti Brumpt and Lebailly, 1904 is redescribed from Brumpt's blood slides prepared from the sea scorpion (Enophrys bubalis). Developmental stages occur in the intestine of the marine leech Calliobdella punctata, which acts as the vector. Division occurs only in the amastigote stage which subsequently changes into a sphaeromastigote and epimastigote forms. Yellow pigment granules characterize all developmental stages except slender epimastigotes. No metatrypanosomes were observed. Résumé. R… Show more

“…The trypanosome developmental forms observed in Z. arugamensis are typical of those reported from marine leeches in the northern hemisphere (see Brumpt 1904, 1906, Robertson 1907, Neumann 1909, Khan 1976, 1978a. Trypanosome stages were also found in both a juvenile and adult Z. arugamensis, suggesting that flagellates are acquired at a young age and sustained into adulthood in these annelids.…”

“…It differs in size and, in particular, in its long PK region (Brumpt & Lebailly, 1904;Lebailly, 1906). T. cotti also displays striae, but is a smaller trypanosome with a longer PK region (Brumpt & Lebailly, 1904;Lebailly, 1906;Khan, 1978). T. gobii (sensu Brumpt & is of similar length, but in Lebailly's (1906) amended description, its measurements were diminished.…”
