A Reduced Reference Distortion Measure for Performance Improvement of Smart Cameras

Abstract: Application specific information processing (ASIP) unit in smart cameras requires sophisticated image processing algorithms for image quality improvement and extraction of relevant features for image understanding and machine vision. The improvement in performance as well as robustness can be achieved by intelligent moderation of the parameters both at algorithm (image resolution, contrast, compression, and so on) as well as hardware levels (camera orientation, field of view, and so on). This paper discusses t… Show more

“…17 (a,b). As a matter of fact, the accuracy in detection depends upon the quality of biomedical sensing system that must be in line with severe requirements [40] and the spectrum of the system. In some cases, thermal imaging with special configurations [41] is able to overcome some (but not all) limitations due to hidden tissues.…”

“…These fusion metrics are essential not only for the sake of performance comparisons but also provide a versatile means of tuning parameters of the fusion algorithm (aiding in performance improvement). These IQA metrics are enlisted under Table I; where the necessary details and terms used can be referred to in [32]- [33], [44]- [45].…”

“…On the other hand, flash photography accounts for addition of light to the surrounding in order to overcome the above mentioned constraints of no-flash photography. However, lesser values of camera gain and shorter exposure times leads to introduction of noise even in the flash image [1]- [2]. This superimposition of noise can be accounted in the form of Gaussian noise and Rayleigh noise.…”
